I've been working on the wedding invitation video for the last two-three weeks and I was getting pissed about the typical DV codec weakness with text, namely jagged edges. I was trying to have really good loooking text as well as straight lines and all of that stuff, so I set out to figure out if I could use a better codec but still maintain 720x480.
My project consisted of these elements:
DV footage
JPG Pictures
A "polaroid" png file to overlay the jpg picture
Two PNG backgrounds that went behind the JPG pictures. I don't know why I didn't merge the two pictures together, but I should have.
Animated text from livetype
FCP Text
First, I changed my sequence setting compression codec to HDV720p30 (I probably should have changed the PROJECT setting so that all new sequences were setup this way).
You could instantly tell from the high res jpg pictures and the background pngs that the HDV coded produced less jaggies. The live type files were not necessarily jagged but since the font was kind of thin, the compression kind of removed segments of the text.
I had imported live type rendered files as well as the live type .ipr file. I went to livetype and then settings and change the "dpi" for both horizontal and verital to double of what was listed, resized the motion text and saved. I switched out the .mov files with the .ipr and resized accordingly
The font looked a lot better now!
For all of the pictures, background, polaroid overlay, etc I made sure that the file was at least double of an ntsc dv screen size (the polaroid was 800x800 so I doubled each dimension, 1600x1600). That way, it would render smooth in HDV.
Editing in HDV was a pain on my Quad G5 since I had to render a lot, so it may be best to edit in DV and then go through all of the sequences and change the settings to HDV and then render from the top level sequence (assuming that you are nesting). It will not render the individual sequences, but at least you would only have one render. I am a little wary of this method, but it should work.
EXPORTING
Export the sequence using current settings (assuming in hdv720p30 was set before in the sequence).
COMPRESSING
In compressor, drag the file in. You will notice in the preview area that it is stretched out as if it was 16x9. Drag over the compression setting (I was using dvd-mpeg2), click on the item, and then go the detail window for the setting (usually on the right). There is a box that says 16x9, click the "asterisk" next to it and change to 4x3.
The files will now be in the correct aspect ratio with very smooth text and great looking graphics!
